The BioBus visited Sussex, New Jersey this week, looking at swamp, pond, and puddle water collected by 5th graders at Wantage Elementary school. Check out this great news story that made the front pages of the New Jersey Herald. We’ve found that rural and suburban school students benefit from interactions with scientists and high tech science on the BioBus as much as those in big cities like NYC and Indianapolis.

Mr. Colbert is very interesting, especially at the cellular level.

Stephen Colbert, host of the Colbert Report, showed timelapse movies of his neutrophils as recorded aboard the BioBus during his interview with author Rebecca Skloot on the March 16th, 2010 show. Neutrophils defend our bodies against attacks from bacteria and other foreign invaders and are a crucial first line of our immune system. Stephen’s neutrophil is seen here crawling around, looking for something to munch on. Thanks for donating the cells, Stephen, and sorry we couldn’t really immortalize them! Read more in Dr. Ben’s blog on The BioBus Daily News.

Of course, the BioBus spends most of its time bringing hands-on science education to low-income school students. You can support our efforts by volunteering your time or donating your money. Every cent donated goes to bringing hands-on science education to the students who need it most. Check out the rest of the site to see more about how your support will help the BioBus help students reach their full science potential. And check out the BioBus blog for pictures of Colbert aboard the BioBus and the full TV segment.

Watching the students make their first connection with microscopy is incredibly rewarding, says biologist Nicolas Biais, who worked with Dubin-Thaler at Columbia and has gone out on the BioBus several times. “When you show them something, they just get it instantly,” he says.
