BioBus Cross-Training, Saturday, September 12 @ NYU

Scientist Educator Cross-Training Day

Event Date: Saturday, September 12, 2009
Location: NYU Department of Physics conference rooms, 4 Washington Place, New York, NY
Time: 10am – 5pm with lunch provided
Cost: Free with registration (email training@biobus.org)
REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT IS NOW CLOSED – EMAIL training@biobus.org to receive news about future events

To All Educators and Scientists:

Please join the BioBus for a day of teacher training and BioBus curriculum development. The educators will help the scientists become better teachers; the scientists will teach the teachers cool science and techniques; everyone will learn how to work aboard the BioBus to bring students across NYC hands-on science education. Additionally, a group of artists will join us to brainstorm designs for an educational mural to be painted on the side of the BioBus. RSVP on Facebook or by email to training@biobus.org. If you are new to the BioBus, you can learn more about us and our mission at www.biobus.org.

Schedule

We will spend the majority of our time working in small ‘breakout’ groups where we will loop between teaching BioBus modules and critiquing and improving those modules. All participants will have the opportunity to teach on the BioBus itself as well as practice teaching different modules that interest them. Frequent refreshment breaks and lunch will be provided, and the day will be followed by a social gathering at a local establishment.

10-10:30 Coffee and convene
10:30-11:15 BioBus Tour, Opening discussion, goal setting
11:15-12:30 Breakout Session 1:

  • Motility experiments on the BioBus (Jean, Guy)
  • Physiology lesson planning, 7th floor conference (Jackie, Andrea, Tasha)
  • Discovering Temperature and Particulate Matter, lesson planning, 6th floor conference room (Jasna)
12:30-2 Lunch at Dojo
2-3:15 Breakout Session 2:

  • Mural planning at BioBus & 6th fl. conference room (Donald + Ragan)

  • Motility lesson planning, 7th floor conference (Ben)
3:15-4:30 Breakout Session 3:

  • Discovering Temperature and Particulate Matter, lesson planning, 6th fl. conference room (Jasna)
  • Motility techniques, 7th floor (Ben, Jean & Guy)
  • Physiology experiments, on the BioBus (Jackie & Andrea)
4:30-5 Closing discussions, planning
After 5PM After-party

Breakout Sessions Descriptions:

  1. Motility, where we will learn to teach students about cell theory by preparing live samples of bacteria, protozoa, plants, and animals, and recording their movements using digital microscopes. Teacher/Scientist Guy de Baere and New York Microscopical Society member Jean Portell will facilitate these sessions along with Ben Dubin-Thaler.
  2. Physiology, where we will learn to use phase-contrast and fluorescent microscopes to study plant and animal cell physiology through direct observation of cellular organelles. Future Science Educators Members and Scientists Tasha Simms, Andrea Procko, and Jackie Novatt will facilitate.
  3. Discovering Temperature and Particulate Matter, a brand new module on the BioBus supported by the NYU Materials Science Research and Education Center (MRSEC), where we will learn how to lead explorations of the amazing chemistry and physics of everyday foods and materials around us. NYU Professors Jasna Brujic and Paul Chaikin will facilitate.
  4. Education through art – help develop a mural for the side of the BioBus that will give a brief (Earth-centric) history of the universe from the Big Bang to multi-celled organisms. Professional artist Donald Gallagher, will work hand-in-hand with scientists and educators to make the most of this exciting endeavor. Painter Donald Gallagher and scientist Ragan Robertson will facilitate.
For educators, this event will be a great way to learn new techniques and also learn about how the BioBus operates and how it can be integrated with your school or classroom. For scientists, this is an opportunity to practice your teaching skills on the BioBus. Cross training is about bringing different skills together around the BioBus mission – Driving Social Change Through Science Education.
